Background
The
Concrete Masonry Design Awards Program recognizes
and encourages outstanding architectural design that
incorporates the use of concrete
masonry. The program also recognizes the Designers, Builders, Craftsmen,
Structural Engineering Firm, Concrete Masonry Supplier, and the Owners.
This annual program is sponsored by the Concrete Masonry Association
of California and Nevada (CMACN) and co-sponsored by AIA California
Council. |

Eligibility
Projects
must be located in California or Nevada and constructed
and
completed within the last five years
to be eligible. All new built projects
that incorporate concrete masonry
units in their design are eligible
for this awards program. Concrete
masonry products for purposes
of this program, means concrete
masonry block. These may be
either single structures or a group
of related structures, including
parks, plazas and monuments.

Awards
A
single outstanding project in
each category, as selected by
the
Jury, may receive the Concrete
Masonry Grand Award Sculpture
designed
by Sacramento designer, Michael
Dunlavey. At the discretion of
the Jury,
other distinguished projects may
be recognized with an Honor or
Merit
Award. In addition to the traditional
awards, the Sustainable Design
Award
could be presented to a project
from any category. Additionally,
a project can
win a category Design Award and
a Sustainable Design Award. All
awards
will be presented the evening
of Friday, September 26, 2008
at the Four
Seasons Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada.
The winning projects will be published
in the Awards Edition of “CMU
Profiles in Architecture.” All
eligible
projects will be submitted to
the National Concrete Masonry
Association
Design Awards of Excellence competition
in August, 2008.

Entry Fee
Each
project entered in the Concrete Masonry Design Awards
Program must be accompanied by a non-refundable $100
entry fee. This fee should
be included with the Request for Entry Form and should be post marked no
later than March 31, 2008.

Entry Format
All
entry materials must be contained in the binder
provided by CMACN. Categories for submittal must
be clearly stated and chosen from one of these categories:

Education |
*All
projects submitted are eligible for the Sustainable
Design Award.
The material requested in the binder consists of,
but is not limited to, a 300 maximum word statement outlining how the distinguishing
factors of the project relate to the judging criteria with an emphasis on the
use of the concrete masonry.
Applicants will complete a statement of sustainable
design strategies that significantly impacted the design of the project and the
related use of masonry products.
Required are a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 10
professional high-quality color digital photos (JPEGs) on a Windows XP compatible
CD, which will have a minimum print quality of 300 dpi, along with 8” x 10” or 8.5” x 11” glossy
color photos of the digital CD photos. Digital photos of the site plan and floor
plan(s) must also be included, and are in addition to the color photos.
Projects must show a photo of each exposed side
of the building or environment. One additional photo showing the context of each
exposed side of the building (may be omitted if the project’s relationship to its context is clearly defined in other photos). For a group of buildings, please include one photo of the project, which sufficiently illustrates the complete project, including its relationship to its environment. Additionally, two photos are required of the interior of the building. If the concrete masonry is a primarily interior building material, supply images to illustrate the product’s
use.
All photography submitted must include a signed
release form. Entrant must clear rights to photos, and plans for incorporation
into CMACN, AIACC and NCMA publications. Entrants are responsible for any royalties
or copyright photography fees. Before submitting, entrants must have the owner’s
approval to submit the project(s). Owners must be informed of potential site
visits and significant recognition by the media that could occur.
